Therefore, when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” John 6:14
They knew Him to be the Prophet who was to come into the world. He fed them with miraculous food -- just like Moses said He would.
With Jesus, they knew that they could have their “best life now.” They praised Him and sought Him and found Him and praised Him again. So, why did He not accept their praise?
He said, “All those whom the Father has given to Me I will not cast out.”
So, why did they walk away?
Many are saying, "Who will show us any good?" Psalm 4:6
But Only those whom the Father has given can say, "You have put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and new wine abound." Psalm 4:7

Is this a predestination proof? Is it the idea that many are attracted to what he does externally because what He does is always good, but fewer are attracted to Who He is because that has to come from within by His Spirit?
Thanks for the "food for thought".
I think you've got it, but I would say it a bit differently. I would say that many are not attracted to that one thing that He does above all other things. Having no regard for THE work, they have no regard for the Person of Christ.
It is here in John 6, where the crowd first goes from mass support to mass complaining. It is here that the same crowd, so bent on thrusting Him into office, will also hear Jesus urge them, true to His Old Testament Mosaic type, "Do not grumble!"
And it is here where He explains that in walking away from Him they walk away from more than just a gift giving miracle Worker, but from the One who offers up His whole righteous body to cover their unrighteous ones. But they must first know their need; and for this they have to be regenerated (receive palingenesis) by the Holy Spirit.
